The One Take Sessions return tonight to Cleere’s theatre having taken a mid-season break for the month of August. This time around, the tri-weekly music series features Callan guitarist Peter Brabazon, Dun Laoighare resident Hamlet Sweeney and Carlow’s Joe Cleere.
Described as having “Very catchy, melodic songs that will have you hooked”, Hamlet Sweeney is yet another Irish act making their One Take Sessions debut on the Cleere’s stage.
Speaking about his influences, he said “I am most influenced by the people I meet but in reality there is nothing that I do, see, feel touch or hear that doesn’t influence me. But that’s kind of a cop out, isn’t it? The way I look at it all types of music have their place and if that’s where you are that’s what you want to hear. From legato classical to banging techno to beautiful songs. It’s all good lads, it’s all good”.
Winner of the 2006 2FM National Song Contest, Joe Cleere makes his second appearance at this year’s ‘Sessions series, bringing with him recently released single ‘Queue’.
As a music artist Joe has been traveling a long route to hopeful success. Cleere picked up guitar at 11 years old and played his first gig at 12, under the act “Joe plays Jimmy (Hendrix)”. At just fourteen Joe recorded his first EP in a friend’s studio in Finland. Subsequently a song from this disc, “How Does It Feel”, entered the final of the Jacobs 2Fm Song Contest 2001. Another entry made it through in 2003, with Joe eventually picking up the winner’s gong in 2006.
This year Joe received an Artlinks Bursary Award of €8,000 to help fund his release. The first single “Queue” will be launched on September 13th from Radio City Dublin and the album will be released in February 2009. The band will also be giving away 10,000 free copies of “Queue” in September 2008 to mark the introduction of the act into the music industry.
Cleere and his Band have been gigging around Ireland extensively over the past few years, playing venues such as Eamonn Dorans, Cleere’s Theatre, Voodoo Lounge and support slots for bands such as The Script (2008). They have also traveled as far as Slovakia to play festivals. On releasing the album the band hope to start touring further in Europe and the UK.
The One Take Sessions continue to the end of the year with just four dates remaining between October 2nd and December 4th.
The final One Take Sessions of the year will see the welcome return of four acts selected over the course of the 2008 series. According to KilkennyMusic.com, demand has been so high for this year’s series that bookings for 2009 (March to December) will open in October in order to facilitate the number of requests for coveted performance slots.
Callan resident Peter Brabazon, who recorded over the years with ‘The Connaught Ramblers’ will start the proceedings in Cleere’s at 9:30pm on Thursday night. Admission as always is free and full details can be found by visiting OneTakeSessions.com or KilkennyMusic.com.
Not resting on their laurals gig-wise, KilkennyMusic.com will also be in action next weekend with the long-anticipated return of Vesta Varro to Kilkenny with special guests on the night Chemical Addiction. That show takes place on Saturday September 20th. To be in with a chance of seeing the gig for free, check KilkennyMusic.com for details.
We’ve had one slot open up for the One Take Sessions for September for a solo / duo performance (not full band). If you’re interested, get your request in quick to sessions@kilkennymusic.com (booking form will show September fully booked out).
Tonight’s One Take Sessions, the last before September, continues in Cleere’s Theatre with news that Harry Rambles (resident in Whelans, Dublin, on Sunday nights) is replacing El Scamperino.
El Scamperino was due to appear with Walkperson, both acts on a joint tour for the end of July / August but due to ill health Sean (El Scamperino) won’t be making an appearance. We wish him a speedy recovery and hope to have him at the ‘Sessions before the end of the year or into the 2009 season.
Tonight’s lineup will feature Harry Rambles, Michael Whelan, Walkperson and The Lions Mane.
Doors open in Cleere’s Theatre before 9:30pm with the first act taking to the stage at 9:30pm.

It’s a case of lucky number seven this week as the One Take Sessions returns with three more acts for you.
This Thursday night you’ll be able to catch
As always, music kicks off at 9:30pm and admission is free. The One Take Sessions are completely booked out for 2008 but those of you continuing to send in applications will be shortlisted. You can also email sessions@kilkennymusic.com directly to request further details on bookings.
See you this Thursday.
The weeks seem to be flying by at this stage, we’re already into the middle of the year and the summer period of the ‘Sessions. Having seen a great night in Cleere’s over the June Bank Holiday weekend, we’re back again this week and bringing
- Dirty Epics
- Travega
- Joe Cleere (Band)
- and Evan Prendergast
- ReClaim
- Ginosko
- Shane Barry
- Nick Day
with us for the next in the series of the One Take Sessions.
Three of the four acts this week will be making their ‘Sessions debut in Cleere’s while Evan Prendergast (18) will be using the night to launch a new EP in aid of the Irish Cancer Society.
First act takes to the stage at 9:30pm this Thursday night. You’ll find Cleere’s Theatre on Parliament Street in Kilkenny (opposite the Watergate / Brewery). Drop in and catch these four acts under the one roof for the best price… free.
The One Take Sessions returns again this Thursday and (coincidentally) just like last year, we’ve found ourselves on the lip of the June Bank Holiday weekend and the start of the Cat Laughs comedy festival here in Kilkenny.
If you’re visiting Kilkenny or are a ‘Sessions regular then why not start your Bank Holiday weekend on the right note and join us in Cleere’s Theatre on Parliament Street where music kicks off this Thursday night at 9:30pm.
Guests include a trio of local acts in the form of Kieran Byrne, Ken McGuire and Alan Dawson while Sligo’s Siobhan O’Donnell joins us (after a fairly long drive) for the night.
Keep an eye on the site for more details or better still, drop into Cleere’s where you can enjoy four more great acts free of charge. Can’t argue with that!
The One Take Sessions dates available for September and October have been pretty much booked out, the only available slot (up for grabs at the time of writing) is a single spot for solo / band on Thursday October 23rd. Our December One Take Sessions is by invitation only, though if you would like to get your name in the hat then please contact us on sessions@kilkennymusic.com
Our last remaining dates to book for the year are in November. If you’re touring, have joined us already or would like to play the ‘Sessions before the booking closes completely on 2008 then please, again, email us to sessions@kilkennymusic.com.
Looking forward to seeing more of you for another night of the One Take Sessions this coming May 29th.
The One Take Sessions returns for the next in the 2008 series of gigs, tomorrow night in Cleere’s Theatre, Kilkenny (Thursday May 8th).
On the bill we’ve got
Doors open at 9:15pm and the first act takes to the stage as always at 9:30pm. The One Take Sessions series is now booked out until October 2nd of this year, with two slots available for each of October 2nd and 23rd and four slots available for the second last ‘Sessions of the year in November.
If you would like to book a space for yourself at the One Take Sessions, use the booking form via the link in the menu or email sessions@kilkennymusic.com with your preferred dates.
There’s no cover charge (again, as always) tomorrow night so why not come down and kick off your weekend with four more great independent Irish acts.
The 20th One Take Sessions took place last night where we had the delight of seeing Cian O’Sullivan, Rob O’Connor and Bright Light Fiasco return to the ‘Sessions stage once more (following appearances about 12 months ago), while Rich Wyman wowed the audience with a virtuoso performance on piano all while nursing a sore throat (helpfully through some hot whiskey remedies).
Needless to say, the recordings from last night’s sessions should make for some fantastic listening.
KCLR 96FM’s Jenny Nolan was there for the night and managed to grab Rich and the Bright Light Fiasco lads for some interviews and we’ll be handing some tracks over to the station (hopefully) for inclusion in an upcoming Culture Club slot.
Keep an eye out on DownloadMusic.ie too for the release of Bright Light Fiasco’s new single ‘A New Way Of Living’, hitting the web and shops from next week.
The Culture Club airs on KCLR 96fm (and via the web) every Tuesday night between 8 and 9pm.
